A Moody Side of Berlin

When I first started shooting analogue again, I thought that film requires a lot of light and is not suitable for evening and night photography. This turned out to be completely wrong. Night shots on Tri-X 400 have a beautiful quality about them. They are rough and contrasty with a good dynamic range.
The best time to walk around the city and take pictures is after a rain, when the streets are wet and reflect the city lights, thus making the pictures brighter and even more interesting.

The only downside of that kind of weather is that it takes some willpower to go out and shoot in these conditions. In my case, most of these images actually happen when I have to go outside anyway, like while walking to the subway station, rather than on a dedicated photo walk. I therefore try to carry a camera as often as possible, so I don‘t miss these opportunities.

As I prefer fast lenses with large apertures, I mostly use primes. In most cases I only bring one lens (a Nikon 50mm f1.8 for my Nikon FE2). This setup is relatively light and also liberates me from thinking about which lens to use and constantly swapping back and forth. Instead of using a tripod, I simply try to hold the camera as still as possible and accept all noise and image blur.
